The EARTH ICON II is one of 3 Earth Goddess paintings I did for my Fisherman and Mermaid’s Tale series. The work first debuted in a 2018 Solo exhibition of sculptures and paintings about an epic love story between a fisherman and a mermaid.
Though it bared some resemblance to myths and tales across many cultures, my story had been essentially inspired by two paintings I did while travelling in Brazil. The many unique qualities in its storyline were formed by the art I created after my return to Australia,
THE STORY PUT SIMPLY: a mermaid and fisherman fall in love; she transforms her tail into legs after their first year together to experience the earth with her lover. They became great travellers taking in everything that the earth has to offer them. By their 8th year together they travel less, and the fisherman himself goes through a gradual transformation. One evening as they walked arm in arm along the seashore, the fisherman entered the water and transformed into a dolphin; taking them both back to the sea.
The 3 Earth Goddesses emerged in my work each holding a different native Australian flower and a rough brilliant gemstone. They appeared right after I completed ‘The Princesses Throne’ painting which depicted the underwater ceremony which transformed the mermaid’s tail into legs. A mermaid stepping on land and embarking life on the Earth could possibly spark cataclysmic events. To ensure her safety and smooth transition the Goddesses, guardians of the Earth do their own ceremony to welcome the mermaid to her new home. Her bravery, loving heart and childlike curiosity rewards her and wins her powerful allies.
The Earth Goddess no.2 holds white Proteas and Hakias and a magnificent Rose quartz in the other. The figure’s three quarter view is rounded and gentle. This Icon has soft earth qualities. It’s dominant colour is a golden ochre.
NOTE: She comes already beautifully framed in an oak box frame
