A painting from my solo show: The Fisherman and Mermaid’s Tale, and part of a series of 3 Earth Icons.
I had been busy creating work for the exhibition and had completed 4 canvases and a sculpture when I took a break and went on a short holiday. One day while seated in a plane I sketched a rough design of a female figure with a geometric pattern in the background, holding an Australian native flower in one hand and a crystal in the other. I knew then that I wanted to paint this when I returned to the studio the following week.
I didn’t understand why at the time as it didn’t seem related to the theme of my exhibition. I took it as a sign that a detour would do me good. Much later it became clear that it did belong to the exhibition. The story that inspired my show tells of a an epic love between a Mermaid and a Fisherman. After a year of having many adventures on the sea together, she develops a deep longing to walk on the Earth with him and requests to have her tail transformed into legs.
The Icons importantly, came to me me before I painted the picture that depicted her legs being formed. I realised that they were Earth energies preparing the ground for her arrival. The sacred, iconic style of these paintings and the female figures holding elements from the Earth, became goddess-like energies and guardians that were mysteriously assisting the mermaid and helping me tell the story.
This figure holds an Amethyst and Banksia. Gold acrylic paint has been applied around the figure’s head.
NOTE: The painting already comes with a beautiful custom wooden oak frame.
