My earlier sculptures did not hang on walls and I was more interested in them being totem and doll-like.
After a few years I stopped using the sewing machine and built them up using a more sculptural approach, similar to how you build up a form out of clay. A friend had given me a sewing machine so I was cutting shapes out of fabric, sewing them together and stuffing them to get my core form.
The Sun Doll was painted on, sewn, embroidered and collaged with paper and fabric. She was made to represent the openness and warmth of the sun with an expression to suit. I thought of her as an object to be placed in a special space in someone’s home an altar piece of sorts.
