The angel stands poised, drawn to the bird flying from over her shoulder and holding out a large flower in her hand. She bears a striking resemblance to my Garden Gate ink drawing that depicts a mermaid who has begun life on earth with newly formed feet. The connection between the angel and the mermaid is bound to become clear to me eventually. For now the connection is intuitive.
In 2012-13, the Angel appeared in two paintings during my exploration of story formation in my creative process. Around the same time floating star-men had dominated, flying carefree amongst dazzling star filled skies. Eventually the process brought more colour and an explosion of shapes. This was the beginning of a series of work where magicians, angels and other mystical characters took the stage.
The next major series came after a year of travel in South America and by 2017-18, storytelling had become cemented in my work. I developed a method that generated detailed and ever evolving storylines from art. Three core themes emerged: The Fisherman and Mermaid’s Tale followed by The Wishing Tree and Bird Woman & Fairy Man.
A few years later I realized that the WISHING TREE is the source of all the stories that emerge from my art. The Angel is likely part of a myth that stems from a wish that someone visiting the tree has made. To better understand this, click HERE to see the audio-visual video of the Wishing Tree Story
The PAINTED SCULPTURE features strongly in my art and is the truest description for my 3D work.
I’v been exploring a monochromatic palette in some of my art and enjoy the particularly graphic character it brings to sculptural work. ANGEL DREAMING has been created out of found objects, paper and fabric collage. She has been painted , wired, sewn, glued and paper mache. She is one of the few free standing sculptures Iv made, as they usually are made to hang on the wall.
