The mermaid immediately recognized the birds as friends. They reminded her so much of fish. Artistically, they had me  come to the same conclusion.

The birds flew around the mermaid in the same way schools of fish had swum around her underwater.

Birds were like fish above sea level, they too followed her everywhere and protected her.
