INTO THE LUSH GREEN is part of the Fisherman and Mermaid’s Tale series

Along with ‘DIVE IN’ it belongs to an epic love story I created spontaneously whilst painting in a small fishing village in northern Brazil a few years ago. Those artworks led to a fully formed story that continues to fuel my art making and thus the story continues to evolve.

The story put simply: a mermaid and fisherman fall in love; she transforms her tail into legs after their first year together, to experience the earth with her lover. They became great travellers taking in everything that the earth has to offer them. By their 8th year together they travel less, and the fisherman himself, goes through a gradual transformation. One evening as they walked arm in arm along the sea shore, the fisherman enters the water and transforms into a dolphin; taking them both back to the sea.

‘Dive’ and ‘into the lush green’  depict the mermaid’s early venture into the forests surrounding the fisherman’s hut. Soon after the fisherman teaches her how to walk she goes alone for a short while into the surrounding lush green forests and mountains to get a feel for the earth under her new feet
