On Hydra, no cars are allowed on the island, only taxi boats and the donkeys can be heard
This is a little sepia ink sketch I did of this ‘gem of a rock’ in the Aegean Sea. It is done on the back of PLAISO paper, a popular art supplies shop’s wrapping paper.
As a student of the Athens art school, I could get permission to spend time at one of the many school annexes. Renowned for occupying significant buildings of historical or architectural importance and bursting in ‘location location location”
The Hydra annexe was the exquisite: House Tombazi (the house and museum, of a hero from Greece;s War of Independence) situated at the head of the picturesque port. There I was fully supported, even during the school terms with free accommodation and studio space, to work on my art.
Drawing the landscape was an obvious choice as the environment was mesmerizing. Any work depicting this island remains a treasured souvenir.
