“A sighting of a flash of Blue Hair in the forest”.
The mermaid said goodbye to her lover, only for a short time. She wanted to explore the mountains and her new home, walk barefoot on the Earth and make friends with the birds and rivers.. They both knew that she needed to do this on her own. He remained close ; the mountains clearly in sight from his shack on the coast.
The Fisherman and Mermaid’s Tale, first debuted in 2018 and continued through a new exhibition in 2020. i was living in Northern NSW and spending time in the Bellingen hinterlands.
While staying there I was inspired to explore the story from the moment that the mermaid learnt how to walk on the Earth. Once the fisherman had taught her how to walk, she ventured alone into the green mountains and lush landscape with its rivers and waterfalls and wildlife.
In addition, the Bellingen is set close to the coast adding extra magic and setting the stage for making art for a new series of work.
*This work on paper comes presented beautifully in an crisp white mattboard and frame, professionally presented by the Bellingen Framers.
