From the Odyssey again, the servant’s expression is in powerful contrast to the driven greed of the Queen Penelope’s suitors.
The suitors bombarded Penelope, Odysseus’s wife with proposals while her husband was missing at sea. They ate her food and drank the reserves of wine making themselves eventually at home.
She made herself scarce but her servants had to put up with characters such as these.
This servant has dignity in the face of unwanted guests and is a buffer, keeping them preoccupied while their Queen stays at a distance.
